Rights retention is a strategy designed by cOAlition S to support researchers in their freedom to publish in their journal of choice, whilst remaining compliant with the Plan S requirements of immediate open access without embargo.
It is useful in situations where an author wishes to publish in a subscription or hybrid journal, but who also needs to comply with their funder's immediate open access requirements.
This is achieved by adding a rights retention statement in both the submission's cover letter and acknowledgments: 'For the purpose of open access, the author has applied a Creative Commons Attribution (CC BY) licence to any Author Accepted Manuscript version arising from this submission.’
The statement should be used in addition to funder acknowledgement. If a paper also had research funding, then the statement could look like: 'This work was supported by the Wellcome Trust [grant number], [grant number] and Medical Research Council [grant number]. For the purpose of open access, the author has applied a Creative Commons Attribution (CC BY) licence to any Author Accepted Manuscript version arising from this submission.'
Provided the rights retention statement is used in the submission, then authors will be able to publish using the publisher's standard copyright route (i.e. without paying a fee) and make their accepted manuscript available with a CC BY licence immediately upon publication.
If you have any questions, please contact the Open Access Team for further information. The Open Access website also contains further details about rights retention.
